In a significant move ahead of next year's general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.
The late summer uprising was sparked by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.
Details of the New Electoral Agreement
According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.
Wider Political Discussions Taking Place
In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several major political figures. These talks included former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
