The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a Fresh Divinity, Declaring it Their Largest RPG Ever

The anticipation surrounding The Game Awards has been intense, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling photo of a strange statue. The mystery is finally answered. Larian Studios is working on a fresh Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer featuring intense imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.

A Different Direction

For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This choice of words hints that the team might be designing a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another turn-based title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a announcement clip is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it sparked the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, branching plots, and complex character building—traits that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs that are viable if you're playing as a distinct build with a unique decision path.

The series is also notoriously open-ended, allowing players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be completed in diverse methods, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a inventive way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can get ready for more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
