Now is right to change Manchester United's formation - Amorim states.

Manchester United skipper Bruno Fernandes was one of seven first-team players absent from the holiday period win against Newcastle.

Manager Ruben Amorim says that changing Man Utd's formation due to public noise would have meant "the finish" for him.

In a first against Newcastle United, Amorim moved away from his trademark three-at-the-back setup with wide defenders and chose to field an orthodox four-man defense shielded by two holding midfielders.

Amorim acknowledged this ultimately functioned as a six-man defensive block in the final stages as his team dug in for a win - securing just their second clean sheet of the season.

Although he once notably stated that even the highest authority could pressure him to tweak his system, Amorim asserts the capacity to experiment with alternative formations has consistently been part of his strategy.

Nevertheless, he clarifies he could only implement the change when his team were doing well enough - otherwise it would seem as if he was giving in to outside noise.

"When I arrived here the previous campaign, I realized perhaps I lacked the players to perform effectively in that formation, but it was the commencement of a journey," he commented.

"We were trying to forge an identity. Currently is a different moment. We don't have a full complement of players, and we have to adapt, so they comprehend the reason we are making changes.

"The change isn't because of the influence of the media, or the supporters.

"Whenever the press talk about altering the formation all the time, I cannot make a change because the squad will understand I'm altering things because of external voices and I think that is the downfall for the coach.

"When we are playing well in our system, then is the right time to adapt.

"This will help us grow into a more complete side because when our full complement of personnel are available, we are not planning to play with three defenders all the time."

Injury Issues Loom Large

With just two victories in eight games prior to defeating Newcastle, it is arguable whether Amorim is correct to say his side have been playing well.

He is, however, managing with a severely stretched squad, with multiple senior players already confirmed absent for the forthcoming home game against struggling Wolverhampton Wanderers.

That figure will rise if midfielder Mason Mount is unable to recover the injury that forced his exit from the Newcastle game at half-time.

Skipper Bruno Fernandes is one of those who will miss the Wolves clash, even though he is reportedly urging his boss to allow him to return after his hamstring injury.

"Bruno is already insisting he needs to practice," said Amorim. "However there is no chance he is going to play against Wolves. No way. You can write that."

Fernandes' Leadership Endures

Nevertheless, the 31-year-old will almost certainly still be heavily involved, as while most injured stars watch matches from the stands, Fernandes was spotted keeping a close eye on the pre-match routines from the entrance of the tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim is sure his leader to continue offering input.

"He is a natural leader," he stated. "He cannot be the type of player that when he is absent, he's not talking and speaking. He's constantly speaking. That's why he's the skipper.

"He has flaws sometimes - his mannerisms he gesticulates - but he has a multitude of strengths. After he finishes treatment, he heads to observe the rest of the squad practicing. There are a many things you don't see.

"I'm not sure if he desires my job or not, but he's a born leader. The guy is a true captain."

Return Timeline for Key Players

Although the precise timeline for the captain's comeback - and that of other injured players like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - is unclear, by the end of January, the club will see the return of Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from international duty.
