Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several entry passages leading to the site... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their bravery," Healey said. "They were part of a great many British personnel deployed over the festive period. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
