The atmosphere at Lazio's home ground was far from happy during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a team that had let in ten goals while managing only two goals in their previous five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were finishing their most recent demonstration in a long-running conflict with club owner Claudio Lotito.
A Season Falling Apart?
Had their campaign unraveling, or was there ever any cohesion keeping it intact in the first place? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, only for him publicly stated that the board had omitted to inform him about a registration embargo they were about to receive for accounting issues. Reports that he could resign were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.
The Biancocelesti became as messy during matches as off the field, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the rest of their initial five matches, featuring the derby della Capitale. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to tell if they're getting better or imploding.
The Youngster's Surprising Presence
At least one man kept smiling throughout. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to remain with Lazio this year. He spent last season with Parma on loan and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were attempting to stay there a while longer. The signing restriction necessitated a reconsideration. They were unable to thin their squad with no new signings.
He signed initially when Sarri was last in charge, back then just 20 years old graduate of Verona's academy. He made 20 Serie A appearances for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who left at the end of that season, subsequently claimed Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential only to bench him consistently."
Uncovering His Natural Fit
Maybe Sarri was persistently working to work out the nature of the player's talent. Billed as an attacking winger when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for most of that campaign as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. In 63 appearances during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
